Missouri Makers Mary Jae and Rose Anne Barbour Stanard
By Pat Kerns November at Alliance Gallery continues the collaborative efforts of Hannibal artists Mary Jae and Pat Kerns. This month will focus on on the jewelry of Mary Jae. A 17 year veteran of the gallery, Mary came to the gallery as a jeweler who used a variety of stones to make necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
Mary was first exposed to jewelry making on the Carol Duvall television show. She started making and selling her creations during her last year of teaching K-2 nd grade special education in the Hannibal Schools. Three years after joining the gallery Mary became interested in beading and learned her favorite technique, the Peyote Stitch, by watching YouTube videos. She took a class at John Wood Community College learning another technique but returned to her favorite. At first she used a variety of beads until she discovered the jewelry beader Jill Wiseman’s website where she watched videos and discovered the advantages of using high quality beads that were more consistent in size and color. Mary finds that the concentration needed to make her intricate beaded pieces is calming. Mary’s jewelry makes wonderful gifts.
The Alliance Art Gallery welcomes Rose Anne Barbour Stanard (formerly Rose Anne Huck) back to Hannibal. Rose Anne worked with Sally Poole Klintz at Poole Communications as a graphic designer during her time in Hannibal. In 2009 when her late husband Dave Huck retired,
Rose Anne moved to her hometown of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, continuing to work as a graphic designer and painter. Rose Anne is a now full time artist working primarily in acrylics on canvas. Most of her work involves landscapes that often include some water source. She has been represented by galleries in Austin Texas and St. Louis Missouri as well as Poplar Bluff. She is the owner of the Creekside Studio of Art and Design (thecreeksidestudio.com) and creates work of all of sizes, from miniatures to large, 3-panel paintings. She has done commission work including portraits of people and animals.
Recently, Rose Anne, along with her daughter Samantha Blessing Klotz, illustrated a children’s book titled “Twinkle the Star Mouse” by E. E. Arrendale. She brings original paintings as well as reproductions of her work and greeting cards to the gallery. These incredible pieces capture the awesome beauty of nature, especially in her part of Missouri.
You will have the opportunity to talk with our featured artists along with many of the other gallery artists at Second Saturday Gallery night November 9 th from 4:00 to 7:00. A piece of Mary Jae’s jewelry will be given away at 6:30. You do not have to be present to win. This event is free and open to the public.
